Because you don't recognize that the author's reference to whites' double-consciousness, like my reference to the question "How does it feel to be a problem?", are both invoking W.E.B. Du Bois's indispensable work, *The Souls of Black Folk.* You made it about you, instead of recognizing that the discussion is really not concerned with your individual virtue or lack thereof.
