Indeed. That's why these issues are contested, and always will be. Some argue that it matters, some argue that it doesn't. Just because Kavanaugh was confirmed to the supreme court (so, definitely not "canceled") doesn't put an end to the contestation of what is / isn't acceptable in a public official, or a culture, or whatever. Norms and standards and expectations change, and this how they change. It is ludicrous for someone like Josh Hawley to complain of "cancel culture," when he's really just complaining that a sizable percentage of Americans—enough to make a difference to a market-sensitive publisher—strenuously object to his politics. If that bothers him, perhaps he should not be a politician with aspirations to national office.
